Victoria trip info:
Due to COVID-19, it is possible that the annual Grade 5 Victoria field trip will not happen. We will know more later in the school year.
I have received many questions about volunteering. Here are some FAQs:
Q: If I'm not selected to volunteer, can I pay my own way and come along?
A: Yes. But there are some stipulations. There will not be space for you on the bus. You will have to pay your own ferry expenses, vehicle and parking expenses and for your own museum ticket. You will not be entering the Legislature Buildings as they have a limit on numbers. If you are with us, I will be asking you to supervise a specific group while we are on the ferry and in the museum. If you choose not to supervise, please do not deter the selected parent supervisors from their group of children. The supervisors are responsible for their groups and must remain with them at all times. Put simply, this is not a social trip for parents.
Q: When will I find out if I have been selected or not?
A: The first week of May. A letter or note in your child's planner will be sent home. Selected parents are asked to confirm that they are able to attend the trip. Please note that if we get all signed field trip forms in before the due date, the selection process can be completed sooner.
Q: As a supervisor, can I bring my group out on the ferry deck?
A: Yes. But the weather must be agreeable, and the children must stay with their supervisors. Hold onto your hats, because the school or ferry will not be responsible for items blown overboard by strong winds.
Q: Can I allow some kids from other groups to join us from time to time?
A: This is okay during the ferry trips, meals, photo opportunities (use your discretion). But you must communicate with the other parent supervisors and keep a constant head-count. When touring the Legislature Buildings, we will all go as one class (25 + supervisors, teacher). The museum will be self-guided and it is expected that the small groups will stay together at all times.
Q: What about bathroom trips? Do I always have to lead them to the bathrooms?
A: Yes. You are human and will probably have to powder your nose from time to time, as well. If you have to take only one or two children, then be sure to communicate with another parent volunteer that you are leaving your remaining children with them until you return from the washrooms. If you yourself have to use the bathroom, communicate with another parent that you are going to leave your group with him/her for a short time until you return.
Q: Even though I am volunteering, can I still take photos?
A: Yes. It's actually a good way to keep your group together sometimes (group shot!).
Q: Are the children allowed to take pictures?
A: Yes. They are allowed to take cameras on the trip. iPods, cell phones, iPhones, MP3 players, mini game consoles, headphones and iPads are not permitted on the trip. Parent volunteers are permitted to have cell phones.
Q: But, my child's iPhone/iPod is also a camera. Can he/she bring that?
A: Sorry - no. Please make sure it is just a camera and not a multifunctional electronic device.
Q: Will we be buying breakfast on the 7:00 AM ferry?
A: No. Be sure to pack food and/or eat breakfast before leaving your home. Food/meals will not be purchased until the 3:00 sailing.
Q: Aboard the ferry, can I bring my group to the all-you-can-eat buffet?
A. No. The children will be able to buy snacks from either the cafeteria or snack bar. Besides, a bunch of grade 5 students at an all-you-can-eat buffet doesn't sound like much fun to supervise.
Q: Will I be sticking with my same group inside the bus, museum and Legislature Buildings?
A: Yes.
Q: Can backpacks/bags be brought into the Legislature Buildings and museum?
A: Yes. At the museum, however, bags will be stored in a locked bin until it is time for us to leave.
Q: How will I know when a tour is over?
A: Please have your itinerary on you at all times. When in doubt, follow the plan on the itinerary. Explanations as to when and where to meet as a whole group will be given as the trip progresses.
Q: Can I buy treats, souvenirs, etc. for the kids in my group or for any other kids?
A: No. That includes your own child. The only time money will be spent is during the ferry ride back to Vancouver when the children will get the opportunity to buy snacks for themselves. Money will remain with the supervisors until we board the 3:00 sailing.
Q: Do I have to watch what types of food the kids buy during the ferry ride home?
A: Yes. However, teachers will also watch for what is being bought. The kids are allowed to buy a small treat in addition to their snacks, but the majority of what is being purchased should be of the healthy variety and not just "vending machine garbage." Good ideas are items such as sandwiches, fruit, juice, milk, cookies. Bad ideas are chips, chocolate bars, candy, pop.
Q: If I am supervisor, can I meet you at the ferry terminal in the morning?
A: No. All parent supervisors must be present at the school at 5:20 AM and must be present with their groups on all buses, tours and ferries, and must be with the group as we exit the bus at Star of the Sea at approximately 5:15 PM (at the end of the trip).
For more information, don't forget to read over the itinerary very carefully (you can download a copy from this website in the near future). A complete discussion of behaviour expectations will be done during class time when the date of the trip draws nearer.
